What is the role of philanthropy in the context of massive cuts to foreign aid in the US and elsewhere?
In this article in Alliance Magazine, my colleagues, Nina Blackwell and Priya Dhanani, and I offer five guiding principles for philanthropy’s role in the context of the USAID shutdown and other cuts to overseas development assistance (ODA).
Stepping in to provide direct support to local organizations and movements is critical, but much more than that is needed for philanthropy to effectively strengthen movements, political organizing, and a robust civil society.
Five calls to action for philanthropy:
- Provide direct support to local organizations and movements.
- Fund movement building, political organizing, and advocacy.
- Provide long-term, unrestricted grants that shift power to communities and movements.
- Pay attention to its own role in perpetuating our current inequity and instability.
- Invest in decolonial and reparative funding mechanisms.
